TAYLORSVILLE — One man was hospitalized Tuesday with burns suffered in a house fire in Taylorsville.
About 9:20 a.m., Unified Fire Authority crews were called to a home near 5900 South and 3200 West. They arrived to find smoke coming from the basement in the rear of the house.
Seven people were in the house at the time and all were able to get out, said Unified fire spokesman Ryan Love. One man, however, whose age was not immediately known, suffered second- and third-degree burns on the left side of his body, including most of his left arm, as well as smoke inhalation. He was taken to the Intermountain Burn Center at University Hospital in serious condition, Love said.
A couple of turtles were also rescued by firefighters from the house and placed in a garden area until family members could pick them up.
The fire was contained to the basement while the rest of the house suffered smoke damage, Love said. A cost estimate on the damage was not immediately available.
Investigators believe the fire was started by combustible products — possibly paint thinner — that were left too close to a space heater, Love said.
