MAGNA — A motorcyclist died on Wednesday evening after skidding as traffic slowed on westbound I-80 in Salt Lake County.

The crash took place just after 5 p.m. on the westbound side of the freeway near the Great Saltair, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

Traffic was slowing down on the freeway, and the motorcyclist skidded for about 140 feet before a pickup truck hit the rider from behind, UHP said.

The motorcyclist was ejected from the bike and suffered fatal injuries. The pickup driver was not injured, UHP said. The agency didn't identify the motorcyclist.

The motorcyclist was wearing a full face helmet, but it appeared it may not have been properly strapped to the rider, troopers said.

Westbound lanes of the freeway were closed at 7200 West but had reopened as of 8:45 p.m., according to the Utah Department of Transportation.
