OGDEN — An Ogden police officer shot a man after responding to a fight on Monday afternoon.

About 3:49 p.m. Monday, officers responded to the 200 block of 26th Street, according to a statement from the Ogden Police Department. The person who called police reported that there was a fight involving a knife, Ogden Police Chief Eric Young said. The police department's statement initially referred to the incident as a "weapons disturbance."

An officer arrived at the scene less than two minutes after dispatchers got the call, Young said. While the officer was responding, they were "put in a situation where they had to fire their firearm," Young said. He didn't elaborate on what prompted the officer to shoot.

The officer fired about four shots, hitting a man twice, Young added. The man was taken to a hospital and was conscious, breathing and alert as he was being transported, the chief said. He did not have any further updates on the man's condition on Monday evening.

The officer was not injured. Young didn't identify the officer or the person who was shot.

Young didn't say what led up to the original fight. The man who was shot was the only person who received medical treatment, but it's not clear if anyone was injured in the fight, he added.

The officer will be placed on administrative leave while the Weber County Attorney's office investigates the shooting, Young said.

Ogden police are expected to provide more information at a news conference at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

The Ogden shooting was the second police shooting in Utah on Monday after West Jordan police shot and critically injured a man on Monday morning.
