ST. GEORGE — Dixie State's entrance to Division I basketball will have to wait.
The Trailblazers' inaugural men's basketball home game as a Division I program against Weber State was canceled due to a possible positive case of COVID-19 within the Wildcats' program, the universities announced jointly Friday.
The two teams were scheduled to meet Saturday in front of a limited-capacity crowd of 1,000 fans at Burns Arena in St. George, but the Wildcats called off the game due to possible exposure before they had left for St. George, the school said.
The news comes a day after the Trailblazers' women's basketball team canceled its home opener against BYU on Wednesday. The two teams were scheduled to meet Tuesday, after the Cougars face LSU and Washington in the South Point Shootout in Las Vegas, but Dixie State shelved that game "due to DSU athletic department COVID-19 protocols," according to a news release.
Dixie State men's basketball will look to Wednesday, Dec. 2 against North Dakota for its first foray into Division I hoops. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT. The women's team is scheduled to host Saint Katherine on Wednesday, Dec. 9.
Weber State is currently scheduled to host Westminster on Dec. 8, followed by a home game against in-state rival Utah State on Saturday, Dec. 12.
