MOUNT RUSHMORE NATIONAL MEMORIAL, S.D. (AP) — Kimberly Guilfoyle, the girlfriend of President Donald Trump’s oldest son, has contracted the coronavirus. Sergio Gor, chief of staff to the Trump campaign’s finance committee, says Guilfoyle was immediately isolated after the positive result to limit exposure. He says she will be retested to confirm the diagnosis because she isn’t showing any symptoms of COVID-19. Gor says Guilfoyle is doing well and canceling her public events. Gor says Donald Trump Jr. tested negative but is self-isolating as a precaution. He is also canceling his public events. The couple was in South Dakota to hold fundraisers for Trump’s reelection. Trump is giving a pre-Fourth of July speech at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota.

MOUNT RUSHMORE NATIONAL MEMORIAL, S.D. (AP) — Speaking to a largely maskless crowd at Mount Rushmore, President Donald Trump says protesters have waged “a merciless campaign to wipe out our history” amid demonstrations against racial injustice and police brutality. The sharp rebuke in a pre-holiday address Friday to mark the nation’s independence follows weeks of nationwide protests following the killing of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis. Some demonstrators have also destroyed or damaged Confederate monuments and statues honoring those who have benefited from slavery. Trump says, “This movement is openly attacking the legacies of every person on Mount Rushmore."

UNDATED (AP) — The U.S. is heading into the Fourth of July weekend with many parades and fireworks displays canceled, beaches and bars closed, and health authorities warning that this will be a crucial test of Americans’ self-control. They say this could determine the trajectory of the surging coronavirus outbreak. With confirmed cases climbing in 40 states, governors have ordered the wearing of masks in public, and families are being urged to celebrate their independence at home. Even then, they are being told to keep their backyard cookouts small.

ATLANTA (AP) — For many Americans, the Fourth of July won't be about big festivities but setting off fireworks themselves. Hundreds of cities have canceled shows Saturday because of the coronavirus pandemic, and sales of consumer fireworks are booming. Some officials are concerned about fires and injuries with more pyrotechnics going off in backyards and at block parties. In fire-prone states like Arizona, some residents have called on the governor to ban fireworks this summer. While it’s not clear what's driving people to shops, some sellers believe fireworks are a diversion for people who have been stuck at home during the pandemic.

HOOVER, Ala. (AP) — A shooting at an Alabama shopping mall has left an 8-year-old boy dead and three other people hospitalized. Hoover's police chief says that a girl and two adults were hospitalized after the shooting inside the Riverchase Galleria. A local school district identified the boy as Royta Giles Jr. Authorities said they were not immediately sure what led to the shooting. No arrests have been announced. The mall in suburban Birmingham was the site of a 2018 police shooting where an officer fatally shot a Black man with a gun after mistaking him for the gunman in an earlier shooting at the mall.
