KANAB — Three people who died in a crash Sunday evening on U.S. Highway 89 east of Kanab have been identified by authorities.

The crash happened 30 miles east of Kanab about 7:20 p.m. Sunday. A Ford van was southbound on the highway, traveling at a high speed, when it crossed the center line into oncoming traffic and crashed into an Acura SUV, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. All three people in the Acura died in the crash.

On Tuesday, authorities identified the victims as Arturo Torres, 31, of Salt Lake City, Renae Cobian, 19, of Magna, and Laura D. Cobian-Rodriguez, 27, of Salt Lake City.

The driver of the van was flown in a medical helicopter to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George, UHP said. Further information about the driver's injuries was not made available.

The van caught fire and burned after the crash. It is unknown why the van crossed into oncoming traffic, UHP said.

A southbound minivan was disabled after it hit debris from the crash, UHP said. No one in the minivan was injured.
