HOLLADAY — Two men suspected in a hit-and-run were arrested after police say they forced their way into an elderly couple's vehicle at gunpoint Thursday afternoon, police said.

Police responded to multiple reports of a hit-and-run at 3900 South and 900 East in Millcreek shortly after noon and quickly discovered the vehicle was stolen out of Cottonwood Heights, Unified Police Sgt. Melody Gray said. The two men abandoned the vehicle a few blocks and then forced themselves in an elderly couple's vehicle, she added.

"Both suspects were armed. They threatened the lives of this elderly couple," Gray said. "They got in the vehicle and wanted the couple to drive them away."

An officer searching for the men spotted them in the vehicle and pulled the car over near the intersection of Kings Row Drive and Murray-Holladay Road by Big Cottonwood Regional Park shortly after 1 p.m. The men fled the vehicle on foot, she said.

One man was quickly arrested while the other was located just north of Murray-Holladay Road after a brief search and taken into custody, according to Gray. She said both possessed handguns.

Unified police officials identified the two arrested as Justin R. Sheridan, 33, and Cory Webb, 24.

Salt Lake County Jail records show Webb was booked on suspicion of aggravated robbery, receive or transfer of a stolen vehicle, possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person and probation or parole violation. Sheridan was still in the process of being booked on Thursday evening.

The couple was shaken up but uninjured, Gray added.

Olympus Junior High at 4055 S. 2300 East and Crestview Elementary at 2100 E. Lincoln Lane were briefly placed on shelter in place as a precaution as police searched for the second man, Granite School District officials said. Classes in both schools were continuing as normal during the shelter in place.

Editor's note: Police initially said Justin Sheridan is 24 years old, but later updated that to 33 years old. That has been corrected.
