WASHINGTON (AP) — In a wild Oval Office confrontation, President Donald Trump heatedly threatened to shut down the U.S. government as he and Democratic leaders bickered over funding for his promised border wall. The encounter Tuesday offered a grim preview of life in Washington the next two years under divided government. Trump and House and Senate Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer squabbled for more than 15 minutes in the stunning, televised discussion.

WASHINGTON (AP) — In the course of a few hours, Democratic House leader Nancy Pelosi rolled out her approach to President Donald Trump as the two prepare for two years of private government. In public Tuesday, she lectured Trump on the Constitution and wagged a finger at him for characterizing her "strength." In private, she questioned his "manhood," and her disdain for him became public, again, anyway. Pelosi told key House Democrats that the border wall was " like a manhood thing" for Trump.

STRASBOURG, France (AP) — French officials say a man who had been flagged as a possible extremist sprayed gunfire near the city of Strasbourg's famous Christmas market, killing three people, wounding up to 12 and sparking a massive manhunt. France raised its terror alert level. Authorities have not given a motive for the shooting, though prosecutors say they have opened a terrorism investigation. Strasbourg is home to the European Parliament, one of several places that was locked down after the shooting.

WASHINGTON (AP) — An Associated Press investigation finds President Donald Trump's daughter and son-in law could benefit from a program they pushed that offers massive tax breaks to developers who invest in downtrodden American areas. Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner own a major stake in a real estate investment firm that is launching a series of funds to take advantage of the Opportunity Zone program. And separately, Kushner's family firm owns at least 13 properties that could qualify for the tax breaks.

NEW YORK (AP) — Time magazine has named four journalists and a newspaper as its 2018 Person of the Year for standing up for the truth in the face of persecution and violence. The group, which Time announced Tuesday, consists of slain Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi; the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland, where five people were killed at the newspaper's offices; a Philippine journalist under arrest; and two Reuters journalists detained in Myanmar.
