SALT LAKE CITY — Swedish forward Jonas Jerebko was waived by the Utah Jazz on Saturday morning.

Jerebko's $4.2 million contract would have become guaranteed if he stayed on the team beyond July 9, but the Jazz decided he was surplus to requirements for the 2018-19 season. The move takes the Jazz's roster down to 14 players, one below the NBA maximum of 15.

Acquired by the Jazz in free agency last July, Jerebko spent most of his time with the Jazz as an off-the-bench-shooting power forward. He made 41.4 percent of his 3-point shots in the 2017-18 season, the second-best shooting performance of his career. He also ventured inside for baskets while attacking closeouts, and averaged 5.8 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.

Jerebko also started 19 games for the Jazz, largely when center Rudy Gobert was injured and typical starting power forward Derrick Favors was moved to fill his role.

It's not clear how the Jazz plan to fill the last remaining roster spot. They still have the non-taxpayer mid-level exception, which allows the Jazz to spend about $8.5 to $9 million per season on a player, if they'd like to spend it on a free agent from another team. Forward Georges Niang, a two-way player for the Jazz last season and a fixture in the locker room, could be a candidate for the 15th-man role.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports that there is "strong mutual interest" between Jerebko and the Golden State Warriors for his next NBA contract.
