UPDATE: The 900 South on-ramp has since reopened. - - - - - -

SALT LAKE CITY — A man in his 50s was critically injured after he was hit by a vehicle while attempting to exit the 900 South on-ramp on his bicycle, Utah Highway Patrol officials said.

The man was riding his bicycle about 9 p.m. on the 900 South on-ramp to I-15 when he “might have realized they were getting on the freeway and made an abrupt right turn,” according to Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce. When the cyclist attempted to turn around and exit the on-ramp, he was hit by an oncoming vehicle, Royce said.

The cyclist was transported to a hospital in critical condition.

The 900 South on-ramp would be closed for several hours during the investigation, Royce said. Commuters were asked to take alternate routes via the 500 South or 1300 South exits to I-15.
