COLUMBUS, Ohio — For the sixth-ranked BYU men’s volleyball team, the third time was the charm.

After losing to No. 1 Ohio State in the national championship match for consecutive seasons, Gabi Garcia Fernandez had 19 kills and six blocks to lead the Cougars to a 21-25, 25–21, 25-20, 21-25, 15-8 upset of the top-rated Buckeyes in front of 2,237 fans at St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

Leo Durkin dished out 42 assists for the Cougars (3-1), who got 12 kills from Brenden Sander and six blocks from Miki Jauhiainen.

Maxime Hervoir led Ohio State with 20 kills, and Buckeyes star Nicolas Szerszen added 19 kills and three aces for the two-time defending national champions.

Sanil Thomas dished out 55 assists for Ohio State (2-1).

BYU returns home next Friday for a 7 p.m. first serve against Barton College.
