WASHINGTON, D.C. — Two U.S. senators honored the late LDS Church President Thomas S. Monson Thursday on the Senate floor.
Utah Sen. Mike Lee and Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake each honored Monson, who died Tuesday night after nearly 10 years as the president of the church.
“President Monson’s example of service and ‘rescue’ was recognized by many world leaders,” Flake said in his speech on the floor, which lasted nearly four minutes. “In an effort to promote the American spirit of generosity, President Ronald Reagan appointed him to his Task Force on Private Sector Initiatives. President Monson met with religious leaders of all faiths to talk about the welfare program of the church, which has been recognized as highly successful in its scope and mission.”
A video of Flake’s speech was posted online. Lee also honored President Monson with a speech on the floor Thursday. Lee spoke about President Monson for nearly 10 minutes, as well.
"President Monson’s legacy will outlast death because he chose to follow the One who conquered death," Lee said. "He will be missed; until we meet again."
Both Lee and Flake issued statements Wednesday mourning President Monson’s death. Many other local and national politicians also issued statements Wednesday either through emails or social media. President Donald Trump tweeted Wednesday night his condolences, as well.
