LAYTON — A former Public Enemy No. 1 now faces charges of attempted murder for a shooting in Layton.
Eddie Angelo Samora, 31, of Salt Lake City, was charged Oct. 27 in 2nd District Court with attempted murder, a first-degree felony; and possession of a firearm by a restricted person, a second-degree felony.
On Oct. 26, police say Samora went to a Layton apartment complex, 1667 N. Avalon Drive, and shot a man numerous times. "Some of which were while the victim was laying helplessly on the ground," according to charging documents.
When Layton police arrived at the scene, officers found Andy Cabrera, 37, "was shot inside of the apartment. … They found Andy laying on his back, bleeding from somewhere in the torso. Officers asked Andy what happened and he was only able to tell them he could not breathe. He shortly went unconscious," according to a search warrant affidavit unsealed Wednesday.
Investigators learned that Cabrera "had just gotten out of prison two days prior" and the mother of his children was now dating Samora. One of Cabrera's friends "told officers that Andy told him he was going to go over to (the girlfriend's) apartment and confront Eddie about hitting his children," according to the warrant.

Police are searching for a man they believe is connected with a Layton shooting after they say he led officers on a vehicle pursuit that began in Centerville before fleeing on foot in Salt Lake City Thursday afternoon.As of Wednesday, police were still looking for Samora.
In May of 2007, Samora was named Public Enemy No. 1 by the Salt Lake Metro Gang Unit after police said Samora shot another man in the shoulder while driving on I-215. He was later arrested, convicted in federal court, and sentenced to 125 months in a federal prison.
That same year, Samora was convicted of a carjacking in the Rose Park area, pleading guilty to aggravated assault in exchange for a charge of attempted homicide being dropped, according to court records. He was sentenced to one to 15 years in the Utah State Prison.
