MURRAY — Police are asking for the public's help in finding a gunman who shot a man in his car Wednesday, subsequently causing a three-car crash.

About 5:30 p.m., a man was sitting in his car in the parking lot of Check City, 98 E. 4500 South, when another man walked up to the car, opened the door, leaned in and shot the driver, said Murray police detective Kenny Bass.

The driver accelerated out of the parking lot and drove onto State Street, traveling perpendicular to the road across the lanes, where he ended up T-boning another vehicle and hitting a third car.

The man, who police had not yet been able to identify Thursday, was pronounced dead at a local hospital. No other drivers were injured.

The gunman ran from the scene, Bass said. He was wearing tan pants, a black jacket or hoodie, and a black beanie cap.

Bass said some of the incident was recorded on surveillance video from the check company, which is why investigators believe the gunman opened the victim's door and leaned in. Detectives are now asking other businesses in the area to check their surveillance video for images of either the gunman or the victim.

A man was killed after a shooting in Murray on Wednesday evening, police said.

On Thursday afternoon, Murray police tweeted a second surveillance photo of a person of interest. In the photo, a man wearing a black T-shirt and tan pants is walking on a sidewalk with his hands in his pockets. The man is not wearing a black jacket or a beanie cap. But Bass said investigators believe it is the same man.

Police believe the photo was taken after the shooting and that the man dumped his coat and cap somewhere.

Based on undisclosed evidence at the scene, Bass said the shooting may have been drug-related. He said it's likely that the victim was not attacked at random.

"It appears it was probably some kind of prearranged meeting," he said.
