Giants waive linebacker Uani Unga, sign cornerback Smalley

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The New York Giants have waived injured linebacker Uani Unga and have signed rookie cornerback Matt Smalley.

The Giants announced the moves Wednesday.

Unga made the roster last season as a first-year free agent and played in 13 games with three starts. He was inactive for three games with a neck injury. He finished with 59 tackles, two interceptions, four passes defensed and two forced fumbles.

Smalley attended the team's rookie minicamp last week as a tryout player. He played in 42 games at Lafayette with 30 starts. He had 175 tackles, intercepted seven passes and defended 32, adding four sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. He also averaged 24.8 yards on 48 kickoff returns, including two touchdowns.
