Viewer discretion is advised.BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON — A terrible crash was caught on video Saturday afternoon during Stage 6 of the Tour of Utah when a cyclist collided with a support vehicle. It happened on the descent from Guardsman Pass in Big Cottonwood Canyon.
Jackie Tyson, who handles public relations for the Tour of Utah, said the rider was from the team MTN-QHUBEKA and he collided with a support vehicle for Airgas Safeway Cycling team.
The cyclist was transported by ambulance to University Hospital, where he was listed as alert and stable Saturday evening.
Aaron Cengiz, who was riding the course himself as part of the Ultimate Challenge, another event associated with the Tour, said he crashed at that same turn and decided to pull out his phone when the pros started coming by.
"You could tell he was out of control. I don't know if he expected a straight-away or didn't know the course, but he T-boned a support vehicle," Cengiz said.
Cengiz said race officials and medical help immediately assisted the rider.
The injured cyclist's name was not released Saturday.
